Remembering Dr Toh Chin Chye

This morninng, students and staff of Hua Yi Secondary School observed the flag raising ceremony and flags were raised to half-mast to show respect to the late Dr Toh Chin Chye, one of the founding fathers of modern Singapore, who passed away recently.

Chinese New Year Celebration 2012

Hua Yians welcomed the Year of the Dragon with a great Chinese New Year concert held on Friday, 20 January 2012. They were entertained with varied performances by the students and staff.

26 elderly residents from the neighbourhood were invited to join Hua Yians in the celebration and their presence added charm to the festive mood.

The celebration started with a performance by the Lion Dance team, who impressed the audience with their movements. The concert continued with performances by the Dance Society, Guzheng Ensemble, dance routines by our very own Hua Yians and a skit acted out by the new teachers. Prizes were given out to the classes, which won the best Chinese New Year Classroom Decoration

May the Year of the Dragon brings success, good-health and happiness to all Hua Yians, family and friends.

"Be part of Hua Yi Secondary School's family!" This short but powerful phrase caught my eye when I first laid my hands on the 2011's Open House flyer given to me by one of the school councillors.

Indeed, Hua Yi had been a family rather than a school to me. As I walked through the school compound, which I admittedly dragged my feet through over the four years studying in the school, I felt a sense of pride and was glad to be back. It was about 11 am then. It was heartwarming to see the students and teachers make a special trip back to give support to the performances and displays on a Saturday morning.

Some things have not changed. The support, love and care not just expressed by words but also action by the various teachers have made learning in Hua Yi vibrant and fun. I saw in the different classes, teachers and students sharing snapshots of learning experiences in Hua Yi.

I met Mr Ariffin, a class of 2007 graduate in the school canteen. He said, "Although it had been years since I graduated from Hua Yi, whenever I step into the classroom, it brings a warm feeling and I am glad that the school had groomed and developed me into the person I am today, an SAF officer maximising my full potential." Indeed, Mr Ariffin has done very well - owning a car and earning an above average income.

If you have selected Hua Yi but unsure if you have actually made the right decision, as an ex-Hua Yian, I would say, YES! You have actually made the right choice. Welcome to the Hua Yi Family!

Hua Yi's Track and Field Meet 2011 was held on 28 July 2011 at Jurong West Stadium. The weather was to the favour of our athletes who were eager to participate in the race. Students and staff cheered enthusiastically for their houses during the different races. Highlight of the event was the staff and support group race, which was won by the Parent Support Group.

Guest-of-Honour, Mr Goh Khong Shung graced the event and awarded the winning trophy to the champion house.

Fortius House emerged as the champion house for 2011.

Youth Day 2011

Hua Yians celebrated Youth Day 2011 with a fundraising carnival of fun-filled games and activities, scrumptious food and delightful drinks.

Shooting water balloons with Nerf guns, unlocking almost 20 locks in 60 seconds, playing the human table soccer (Human Foosball) and enjoying food and drinks such as cheese fries, cupcakes, sushi, sausages, popcorns, fruit mocktails and flavoured popsicles, Hua Yians displayed the spirit of togetherness with their great teamwork, working together to make the carnival successful and fun event for everyone.

NRIC Presentation Ceremony 2011

This week, students from Secondary 3 classes who are Singaporeans were presented with their National Registration Identity Card (NRIC). A special NRIC Presentation Ceremony was held during the morning assembly to present the students their NRIC.

For the students, receiving their NRICs symbolises their nationality as young Singaporeans. It is also a form of formal identification for them. We hope the students understand the significance of the NRIC and proud to be a Singaporean.

Congratulations to all students who received their NRICs.

International Friendship Day 2011

The World at Home

International Friendship Day, a day dedicated to create awareness among us on Singapore’s relations with other countries. It aims to cultivate the spirit of friendship and togetherness in our students with other people in Singapore or from other countries.

Prior to International Friendship Day 2011, a skit was presented by performers from Singapore Discovery Centre on 1 April 2011. The skit conveyed the International Friendship Day theme, which is “The World at Home”.

Singapore, a place we call home, a place where we live, work, play and a place where we have our family and friends with us. Have we ever wondered what is it like for someone from another country to live in Singapore? What is it like for Singaporeans who live in other country to work or study? What challenges do they face and how do they fit into the society where they live? All these were portrayed in the skit with the aim of getting the students to understand how it feels for someone from another country to live in Singapore and how it is for a Singaporean to live abroad.

To commemorate International Friendship Day, two classes presented the Quote of the Week. Sec 4N1 presented on "We must uphold meritocracy and incorruptibility" and 4N2 presented on "Graciousness".

Upholding meritocracy and incorruptibility is important, as it ensures success not only to ourselves but to the society and our country. With meritocracy each of us has equal opportunity to learn, work and excel in what we do. Singapore is able to maintain racial harmony as meritocracy is practised. With meritocracy, we can avoid incorruptibility, which has damaging effects on all aspects of our life.

Being gracious reflects your behaviour and attitude to others. To be gracious you can start with very small acts, such as greeting the teachers and your school mates OR picking up litters. Be conscious with what we do and say so as not to offend others. Do kind acts and say kind words to others and you will feel good and make others feel good too.

'Open Library'

To bring the library closer to Hua Yians and to encourage every student to read, the Media Resource Library (MRL) started an ‘Open Library’. Two shelves of books are placed near the school’s canteen and near the back gate.

Students are encouraged to pick a book or two to read. You can read it during recess time, before and after school or you may bring the book home to read. Once you have finished reading, you just need to place the book back onto the shelves. For those who like the book, you may keep it. Otherwise, we encourage you to place the book onto the shelves so that others will get to read the book too.

Bonsai Appreciation Programme 2011

All Secondary One students were involved in the Bonsai Appreciation Programme conducted on 26 March 2011 and 2 April 2011.

Objectives

1. To inculcate the values of rootedness, perseverance, togetherness and resilience through the nurturing and shaping of bonsai plants

2. To serve as a platform for parent-child bonding

3. To relate the Bonsai plants to the legacy of the school

The collaborative effort with the various Bonsai Clubs* and the Singapore Penjing and Stone Appreciation Club introduced to the students and their parents on how to care and nurture the Bonsai plants. Each student worked on a pot of Bonsai plant and at the end of the session, the students brought home their Bonsai plants for them to care and attend to.

Ready Bag is a bag, which is ready in an emergency such as fire, air raid or in any dangerous situation.

What do you need to have in a Ready Bag?

Torchlight and/or candles with matches
Transistor radio with additional batteries (for tuning in to war time emergency broadcasts)
Spare batteries in vacuum packs
Whistle
Essential personal medication
First-aid kit
Copies of important documents (identity card and passport) in a waterproof folder

Chinese New Year Celebration 2011

Hua Yians celebrated Chinese New Year 2011 with great performances by the students and staff.

To make this year’s celebration special, elderly residents from Ho Ching Road were invited to join Hua Yians in the celebration.

The celebration started with a performance by the Lion Dance team, who did a great stunt climbing up a pole to roll down a banner wishing everyone a prosperous Chinese New Year.

Islandwide sounding of Public Warning System

•Today, 15 Sep 2010 is Civil Defence Day. As part of the SCDF’s public education efforts aimed at familiarising the public with the three Public Warning System and to raise general awareness on how the public should react upon hearing each signal, there will be an islandwide sounding of the Public Warning System at 1205 hrs.

•The SCDF will be sounding the “Important Message” signal through the island-wide network of PWS sirens. Students and staff are advised not to be alarmed by the minute-long sounding exercise.

•Immediately after the sounding of the “Important Message” signal, the school will tune in to one of the local radio stations to listen to a special infomercial broadcast and learn more about the various PWS signals.

•Huayians are strongly encouraged to participate in this exercise by taking note of the important information being put forward.

Natasha Nadya of 4E3 represented Hua Yi Secondary School during the ceremony.

The Total Defence Day was commemorated by a skit performance put up by the Uniformed Groups' cadets and led by the Girl Guides and ONE Advocates.

All Secondary One students and some with their parents attended a Bonsai Appreciation Workshop. The workshops were held on 13 and 27 Mar 2010. Instructors from various community clubs and the Singapore Penjing and Stone Appreciation Society gave greater insights to the art of Bonsai.

The ONE Advocates and Heritagers held its 2nd Annual Bonding Camp during the March holidays.

The International Friendship Day was commemorated during our school's Sports Day. A YOG booth was set up to allow the students to participate in quizzes and games on our twinning countries, Serbia and Senegal.

Our YOG Ambassadors participated in the launch of WORLD PIECE exhibition at the Singapore Discovery Centre. We are also part of the YOG Project.

National Day Celebrations

This year, we had a brief but meaningful National Day Observance Ceremony. A unique feature this year was the reading of the National Day Message in all four languages. Our teachers such as Mrs Dalina-Firdouse, Mdm Tan Geok Hoon, Mrs Gowtum read in Malay, Chinese and Tamil while Mrs Leong, our Principal summed up the messages in English. There were also interesting performances including a Poetry Slam by the ELLDS team, who won 2nd place in the National Poetry Slam competition and singing of national songs by the school choir. As always, the Uniformed Groups turned up smartly and participated in the Recollections segment filled with pride.

International Friendship Day

The students were asked to do quizzes to help respective houses to earn points.

You may do more than once , and the more correct answers , the more points you will help your houses to get.

It also acts as a platform for them to get points into the score system. Besides the usual track and field events.

During our school's Sports Day , boards and banners were put up and students have to search the answers themselves.

The Quote of the Week Presentations

They represented their class to give a presentation on the quotes they were tasked to work on. Each quote every week is different , students will get to learn about various topics involved.

Total Defence Day Official Ceremony Meaningful skit done by the Uniformed Groups

The purpose of the skit is to get the five aspects of Total Defence: Military, Civil, Economic, Social and Psychological Defence across to the student's population and remind all Singaporeans to doing what they can in Total Defence to ensure peace and security for the future.

Cleaning up xD

Trimming and cutting of bonsai plants by our own hua yian hairdressers =DWatering of all the bonsai plants.

Basically , we were taught everything needed to grow a healthy bonsai plant.

It was a typical friday afternoon , 17 One Advocate and Heritagers from the lower secondary were selected to attend a workshop at Yuhua Community Center.

It is a once a year event.

We kicked off with a 1 hour presentation of the bonsai.

Followed by the grooming and fertilising of the bonsai plant

Did a clean-up of the area.

In the end , all of our "babies" are placed outside the CC.

At the garden to be grown and we were allowed to visit the plants anytime during the CC office hours.

Night Cycling

On 14 March 2009, the Youth Wing, PSG, Teachers, staff and Hua Yians went on a night cycling adventure from East Coast to Hua Yi Secondary School. Along the way, they stopped at landmarks like the Indoor Stadium, the Singapore Flyer, the World War 1 Memorial and Marina Barrage. It was really a show of solidarity and dedication by all participants and supporters.

This is what an Alumni, Mohammad Noh wrote of the event:
One year ago,We came up with something that no one had thought before, no school has done before..Even we thought that it would not be successful..But the passion in our hearts are hungry for it..The mass night cycling was born..It was called Operation Nacht Wraith.That year, We led an army of 100 soldiers to conquer the streets of Singapore from Changi Village to Hua Yi Secondary School..It would not be successful without the help of Alumni, PSG, Teachers and Staff..And history was made. This year,We did it again..With an army much stronger, ready for the war..We raised our swords and charged our horses through the fields..This time it was from East Coast Park To Hua Yi Secondary School..The road was not easy but it did not stop us neither it dampened the spirit of our army..The rovers whom I called 'Autobots' (from the movie, Transformers), looked like they can transformed into giant robots and stop the traffic..They were our Guardians for that night.. Everyone made it safely to the gates of our base..And there were smiles on everyone's faces and sense of achievement despite the fatique we were suffering from..Another history was made. Till today, the pride is still burning in our hearts. I would also like to thank everyone who helped in making this event successful.(PSG, Hua Yi Youth Wing Alumni, Teachers and Staff) I hope that Mass Night Cycling will be a tradition for Hua Yi Secondary School and be organised every year. Its all about Passion and Dedication and always remember that Nothing is Impossible.

This year 4E1 kicked off the Quote of the Week for 2009. This programme is a collaboration between the NE Committee and the English Department.

The topic presented was on the NE Message 6 - "We have confidence in our future. United, determined and well-prepared, we have what it takes to build a bright future for ourselves, and to progress together as one nation."

Among others, the class representatives spoke about what the school did to prepare the students in times of crisis such as the In-Place Protection Exercise, Fire Drill Exercises and the daily temperature taking. They also cited some quotes such as:

1st NRIC Presentation Ceremony 2009

Today, 19 Jan 2009, we had our 1st NRIC Presentation Ceremony for the year. After the ceremony, the NRIC recipients shared their views on the significance of receiving the NRICs.

Lee Hong Wei (4E4) said,"Receiving my NRIC means that I have more responsibility as a Singaporean." Hasif Irfan (4N2) felt that having received his NRIC meant that ,"I should be loyal to my country and follow the rules of the authority." To Sharvin (4E2) it meant that, "I am officially a Singaporean."

Nicole (4N1) added that, "as a citizen, I will sing the national anthem, say the pledge and make my country proud." Wong Yoo Yi (4E2) also mentioned that she, "will fulfill my part as a Singaporean."

We hope that more Huayians will share their thoughts on the significance of the NRIC Presentation Ceremony here.

Mr ONE: Evann, pls share your thoughts about your India trip and how you see yourself as a Singaporean after your HK and India trips.
Evann: During this India trip, like what I share to the study hall students, it really made me step out of my comfort zone as a Singaporean and allowed me to instill discipline in my daily routine. As a Singaporean, we will somehow always take things for granted. Like the school we go to, and start complaining about every single things that come into our way. But during this cultural exchange to Hong Kong and India, the students there literally grab every single opportunities that come in their way, and always without fail treasure whatever they have now with them. I guess as Singaporeans we have to also learn to grab each opportunity given to us.

Ruibaya: The India trip was a really special trip for me. This is so that I have learnt about life and being independent. Taking things for granted. People there(young or old) work to get their needs satisfied and in Singapore we are no even satisfied with our wants and ask for more. We should also learn to be more considerate and think wisely and not complain about everything. The people there do not get excellent facilities like Singaporeans and they have no problems with that. So we should feel bless that we do not get mosquito bites and clean water to drink.

went to changi airport to welcome them with a banner and cheers!
after that together with their buddies went to the choice retreat allowing them to rest there.

and today the study hall student came to huayi sec excitedly.
as some of them came to singapore the first time.
and so i hope you guys will be able to communicate well with them too.

This competition is organized for the Secondary 2 students to commemorate Racial Harmony Day. The competition is expected to end by 18th July 2008, in conjunction with the celebration of Racial Harmony Day.

Objectives:
· Bonding with different races (Racial Interaction)
· Learn different cultures from different racial groups
· Raise the awareness that everyone of us can play a part in having a stronger social cohesion

Date of competition:
The competition will be held tentatively on 10th July 2008, 2:30PM to 5:30PM

Games played:
GIRLS; Captain’s ball - Each class would have 5 players and one reserve. Each game will last for 10 minutes. The game will be held at the quadrangle. After the game, students would have to answer a 5 question short quiz about the different racial groups.

BOYS; Soccer - Each class would have 5 players and one reserve. Each game will last for 10 minutes, and it will be held at the field. Each game would only be half-field, and cones will be used to mark goal posts. After the game, students would have to answer a 5 question short quiz about the different racial groups.

Requirements for participating groups:
1. Work in groups of 6 per class (one group for soccer, one group for captain’s ball)
2. Groups must consist of people from different races, and also heritages
3. Each member who turns up would be awarded one point each, if not up to requirement, points would be deducted.
4. Each group has to collect $150 in total for the Donation card; Groups that collect more than $200 or more will earn 1 pt for every $50 collected.

Attire:
1)P.E. attire
2)Class t-shirt
3)P.E. shorts
4)Soccer boots are ALLOWED

The Little Red Dot

Every morning, we at Hua Yi sing the National Anthem and recite the pledge. We focus our attention on the National Flag as this solemn ceremony takes place everyday. Everyone knows how the Singapore flag looks like but do you know what the colours, the crescent and the stars mean?

The Singapore flag was first unveiled on 3rd December 1959. Upon independence in 1965, it was adopted as the National Flag. The colour red symbolises universal brotherhood and equality of man, while the white symbolises the everlasting purity and virtue. The crescent moon represents a young nation on the rise and the five stars represent the nation's ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.

Singapore is also a democratic nation. This means that the government is chosen by the people. Singaporeans do this every 5 years when they vote for their governing party. One of these party is the People's Action Party which was founded in 1959. Some founding members of the PAP are Mr Lee Kuan Yew and the late Mr S. Rajaratnam. Mr Rajaratnam was also responsible for drafting the Singapore pledge.

With that, I hope you have all learnt a little bit more on our very own little Red Dot.

Reflection on CampTeen

Hello, has been a long time since I've updated on anything.

Last year, I went for CampTeen in Pulua Ubin. It was a four day three night camp. On the first day, went to Braddell at OnePeople.sg during the early morning. There were several other students, all from different schools. The facilitators started us off with some ice-breakers before going on to some presentations on racial harmony. The first day was focused on the theme of Racial Harmony, so after the presentations, we went to Chinatown for the afternoon. We visited several religious places around the area, and had lunch in a mosque. It was quite a new experience, and it was something that is not very familiar for me. I've learned a lot from the first day, as it tells us the importance of maintaining fairness between the different races in Singapore. It also tells us of the threats to racial harmony, such as terrorism, and one notable speech made by the one in charge of the mosque: it is that we should never assume that although somebody from a certain religion commits a sin, we should assume that all of them are bad people. This is entirely a WRONG concept.

During the evening, we finally sailed to Pulua Ubin and stayed out Outbound Singapore. The day ended with reflections and some discussion on what we can do to prevent discrimination of others. For the next three days, we started working on our projects concerning the promotion of the Youth Olympic Games. There were four groups: Culture, Sports, Sports OA (My Group), Arts. Well, what does OA stand for? It actually means Other Abled. This is a much more better term to used for those who are handicapped, compared to disabled. We had to come up with games in which we can have people understand what the other abled are going through, as well as seeing how capable the other abled are. From this project, I learned a lot about not looking down on those who are handicapped, as they might actually be more talented than most people. So, on the 30th December last year, we held the carnival at Youth Park. It was quite a fun day with all the activities going around and people visiting our stall. Well, this is what happened for the camp I went to last year, and I hope that you may get a chance of going this year.

SINGAPORE TO HOST FIRST EVER YOUTH OLYMPICS!!!

I'm sure by now most of you already know that Singapore has won the right to host the first ever Youth Olympics to be held in 2010! The news was announced earlier this evening by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Youth Olympics strive to be a platform for young people to learn the benefits of sports, the integrity of competition, the Olympic values and the spirit of sportsmanship. Youths between the ages of 14 to 18 will be taking part in this world-wide multi-disciplinary sporting event.

Singapore is budgeting $82 million dollars for this event! Now do you realise the magnitude of this?? This is definitely a HUGE step forward for our tiny and yet striving island.

Yay Singapore!!

1st NRIC Presentation Ceremony 2008

The 1st NRIC Presentation Ceremony for 2008 was held on 18 January. The response from the NRIC recipients was over-whelming. They came early, put on their best and participated enthusiastically during the ceremony. The ceremony was started by Mrs Lisa Kwok who gave a brief but very meaningful presentation on the significance of being a Singaporean. The UG cadets from NCC, NPCC, Girl Guides and Red Cros were smart in their respective uniform. They were ably-led by Staff Sergeant Amirul Hafidz (NCC) of 4E5. He will be going to New Zealand to particate in the Thunder Warrior exercise there. The school band played excellently. The pioneer ONE Advocates did exceedingly well to get the registration system going very smoothly. As a result, the school responded positively by singing the National Anthem with gusto and reciting the pledge with pride. Kudos to all. The next ceremony will be held on 15 February 2008.

Exciting Times Ahead!

Hello everyone and welcome back to school! It's been an extremely exciting first day hasn't it? Anyway, I'd like to thank my lovely ONE Advocates for keeping things running for the past one year. Well done, guys! Great job, indeed. :)

Anyway, I have some great news for you out there. The NE family is looking out for new ONE Advocates and One Heritagers members. We need 1 One Advocate per class and 3 One Heritagers. What's the difference you may ask? Well, One Advocates are in charge of organising NE events at the school level while One Heritagers will be conducting events at the class level. One Advocates is a recognised student leadership body in Hua Yi, just like our Student Council. So at the end of the year, you get CCA points for your commitment. As for One Heritagers, you will accumulate CIP hours for your contributions. :)

So if you're interested in joining our little NE family consisting of Mr Amran, Mrs Kwok, Mrs Selina Wong and myself, Miss Leyana, as well as One Advocates of 2007 such as Evann, Alan, Melvin, Ghaz and many more, please do tell your form teachers of your interest. We can't wait to meet all the new members.

hah its me again, Evann. Alan's in India now for a two week exchange trip so i shall blog for him instead. so yesterday we had Advocates breakfast in the morning at the airport before sending Mr Amran, Alan & Melvin off! Now i shall post the pictures we took yesterday! :D

hope all of you did well for ure examinations.. hmmm, wel, recently i went for a camp with some avocates and CEOs.. another leadership camp. it was fun! haha! heres a pic that we took. haha! ok.. wel, the camp thought us leadership skills obviously. haha! every1 enjoyed themselves. we had lots of fun with the instruments that we had as it was part of the camp. the camp's group was oneHeartBeatz and they focus on community building through drum circle [ meaning you play instruments and learn to cooperate with others etc.] ok, we sure hope for more camps.. gotta Run!!

Hello! Evann and Alan here(:
in sentosa, and we are blogging in the middle of the night just for youguyes to know what the leadership camp we are attending is all about. so far we are enjoying ourselves together with ghazali and melissa! the advocates:D we are all having fun and leaning new leadership skills together in different ways. i guess we will be able to share with the huayians when school reopenes! yay:DD

Oh, anyway we will be performing for the community on sunday at marine cove-east coast park. so if you are free you can come down and support us and play the instruments with us. It will be from 330pm-5 noon. NOOOO. we aint sure yet, so when we have the time tomorrow we will come and blog about the timing.

hah! its nice spending our holiday so meaning ful at sentosa learning new skills from other school and interact sharing different experience. schools that participated are Huayi secondary, NUS high, st anthony, Boon lay secondary. making new friends and opening up our social circle.

we shall share with you more when we're back withlots of photos! (:

Teachers Day Celebration

wow! teachers day celebration is this friday!! wow! so fast! have all u guys hav any surprises for ure teachers yet???! i m sure u guys do! hmmm, seems like friday will be an enjoyable day where every1 can relax and spend some fun time with their teachers. hmmm, it happens once a year only!! so u people out there should really let ure teachers have fun and enjoy their day! there would be celebrations from after recess onwards put up by the various committees. haha! i m sure the teachers would enjoy it! wel, i cant wait for this friday especially to see the many smiles from all teachers after all the performances on that day. hmmm, u guys should also go back to your primary schools and say hello and wish ure teachers happy teachers day as well! they have raised ure 6 yrs of education in primary school very wel and u guys ought the be grateful for wad u have done.. so, till then... cherrios!!~~

In conjunction with National Day celebrations, MICA invites all Singaporeans to share their fond memories of places, people and other things they love about Singapore at Earth@sg (http://www.earthsg.com).

Simply click on the “I♥SG” feature on the website to submit a picture together with a short write-up of 50 words describing what you love about Singapore. The best ten entries will win prizes of $100 each!

Over 200 teams of primary school students have produced websites and videos to share what they love about Singapore for two nation- wide competitions organised by Victoria School, and supported by MICA. One team recalled the story of a Singapore prisoner-of-war during the Japanese Occupation, another touched on the delights of their school compound and their neighbourhood, and a group of young soccer enthusiasts crafted a touching tribute to the National Stadium. IC Presentation

Today we had another IC Presentation. It all began with a speech from Yu Lin explaining the importance of these presentations and how much the ICs mean to us as citizens of Singapore. Things were a little different from previous IC presentations as the Uniformed Groups were practising for the National Day Celebration next Wednesday. I got my IC this time and it does feel a bit weird to have two cards now :) Oh well...

51st Prize Giving cum National and ASEAN Day Celebrations

Long title, isn`t it? Next week, on Wednesday (8th August), this is what we will be having the whole day. So the day will be quite filled. Its starts of with National Day, goes on to Speech Day, for the prizewinners, and then for ASEAN Day, where most of the Advocates will be helping out in a room set up with ASEAN exhibits. Look forward to that day then. Bye...

Japanese Exchange Students

Today proved to be a very interesting day. From right after assembly, I have been helping out with the Japanese Exchange Students. There was some 80 Japanese girls from Josei High School (I think that is their school). It was a very busy day and the day started out with a presentation of a skit from the Hua Yi students. Then, the Japanese students had a song and then a dance. Only lower sec got to watch (except for the upper sec that snuck in to see their performance).

After that, we led them to the Heritage Gallery and were encouraged to interact with them. I was sort of held back as I don`t know how to speak Japanese and just stood there watching. Then, when they went down for lunch, one of the Japanese teachers as me to sit down and interact with a group of students. There was a very quiet moment for a while------------, then I decided to do introductions of names. It was difficult to catch all of their names and actually remember them, but at least there was some interaction going on. Another thing, these students are really NOT camera-shy. I mean, almost every single one of them has a camera. After taking a few pictures, and going on for interaction time, I had to go up to present my CCA presentation and demonstration to them.

Though I could tell, when I was speaking, most of them didn`t really understand what I was saying. So I`ve decided before any exchange students come to Hua Yi, I better learn up a few phrases, SERIOUSLY!!! It was fun meeting them and all, and they later on went to the 3E and 4E classes. The group that went to our class taught us about origami, and later had us try to make a jumping frog origami. During the debrief in the AVA room, you can realize that half a day at Hua Yi goes by so quickly, and the Japanese students will be going back to Japan after today. It was nice having them in Hua Yi, and it overall improves Hua Yi`s relations with schools, not only nationally, but now internationally.

Racial Harmony Day and Upcoming Events

Hello! Here is an update of Racial Harmony Day which was commemorated last Friday in Hua Yi. This year`s Racial Harmony Day was more unique than other years as we had our Study Hall guests together with us to commemorate this day. The ONE Advocates got into their various traditional costumes as they went on stage. With Alan as the MC, Racial Harmony Day got off to a start. The first item of Racial Harmony Day in Hua Yi was a traditional Indian dance performed by the Study Hall students. Next up was the presentation of Racial Harmony Day by the ONE Advocates: Evann, Melissa, and Say Yun. This included explaining what is the importance of racial harmony in Singapore and explaining what the Declaration of Religious Harmony meant, before all of the Hua Yians stood up to recite the declaration. After that, we had a skit by the Study Hall guests, a Chinese dance performed by the Dance Society, a few traditional Indian songs by the Study Hall guests, and another presentation made by the Study Hall guests on Lucknow, India. As this was the last day for the Study Hall students in Hua Yi, there was an exchange of gifts between Study Hall and Hua Yi.

The next big event the ONE Advocates will be planning for is the 42nd National Day in Singapore and will be an important event that is upcoming in a few weeks time. Until then, wait and see for what is in store for Hua Yi. Bye.

Committee and Racial Harmony Day

Hi! A brief updates on currents events occuring in our school. First of all, we had a meeting yesterday with Mr Amran discussing some issues. One of them was the new committee and roles assigned to the different people. Here are the roles assigned to the ONE Advocates:

Well, watch out for the Racial Harmony commemoration tomorrow. There will be a skit and a presentation by the ONE Advocates and some performances from our guests the Study Hall students as it is their final day in Hua Yi before they go back to India.

Amazing Race

Hello, it`s been a long time since I updated the blog. Well, this is an update on the amazing race we went through on June 30th. On the right, as you can see, is the badges we recieved in the beginning of the race. I`ve got to admit, we got really confident at the beginning as we went to the race totally prepared, with a bus directory, a street directory, and even a camera. But when we started out, it was quite a pain. First of all, we realized we were going to Raffles Place as our first stop, and most of us were unfamilier with the first stop, which was a temple called Yuan Hai Ching Temple.
Then, we realized our JJC counterpart, Yuen Shen (I think that is how his name is spelled) didn`t have his EZ link card. Quite a horrid start to our day. But, in the end, we came out okay. Out of some thirty something teams, we came out 11th. Not too bad I would say, though a little disappointing as we missed out of the top ten. Here is a list of the stops we went to throughout the race: Yuan Hai Ching Temple, Sri Mariammam Temple, Thian Hock Seng Temple, Ann Siang Hillpark, Armenian Church, Malay Heritage Board. Along the way, we learned a lot about these religious places. From the spiral joss sticks of the Yuan Hai Ching Temple to the Arabic writing that we learned of in the Malay heritage board.

TWINNING PROGRAMME

wow, this year, we are having students coming over to our school as for our exchange programmes like the one we had in the previous year. this year, we are having indian students coming over from INDIA ( not little india! ) so, it would be a good experience for the students who were chosen or had requested from the teacher-in-charge that they want to go for this Amazing trip. wel, i do these students enjoy themselves and play an excellent host / hostess to these indian students. if we do so, who knows? they might even be a excellent host as they had seen how well we have done for them (: signing off. Badge Presentation and Parliament Meeting

Hello, so long haven`t update the blog already. A little update now since the exams has just finished. This morning, during assembly, the ONE Advocates were presented with their badges (shown below).

Later on, after school, we went for the Parliament House meeting to sit in and listen. We first went into the building for a lot of security checks and entered one of the empty assembly rooms for a briefing on how things were going to work out. Because we weren`t the only ones there, with students from other schools attending as well, we were all separated into groups, so we visited during galleries at different times to hear in on the meeting.

My group first went to the education gallery, where our guide told us some facts about Parliament and how it is set up. The education gallery is the only place where we could actually talk without disturbing the meeting. Later, we went to the public gallery, where we were observing the meeting from above. We weren`t allowed to say a single word. Most of what we listened to was a bill on Competition, something that most of us didn`t understand. Though, halfway through the meeting, we saw PM Lee Hsien Loong walk in!

The Parliament

wow, we went to the parliament today.. the ONE advocates, Sec 2 CEOs, some sec 3 CEOs as well as Mr Lee and Ms Tracy. wel, it was an awesome discussion though it was rather...'hard to understand' what they were actually talking about. while i was there, there was this man sitting all the way in front. he is known as MR SPEAKER! xD but he doesnt talk much.. -.- so much for his name.. hahaha! wel, while we were listening to them, PM Lee Hsien Loong came in. we were not allowed to talk but we stared at each other as we saw him walk in.. it was like.. cool.. u get to see him in real life.. haha! wel, cheerio~~
