Speech Day and National Day Observance Ceremony 2013

The 7th of August was an extremely exciting day for all Hua Yians! Hua Yi's annual National Day Observance Ceremony coincided with Speech Day 2013.

The day began with the preparation for Speech Day. Our Guest-of-Honor arrived and students sitting in the hall were able to witness his visit to the newly completed Student Hub through a webcast. The impressed look on the Guest-of-Honor's face brought pride into every Hua Yi student's hearts, for it was their work that decorated the Student Hub.

After the different speeches that were given by the Guest-of-Honor and our principal, the students were treated to a series of stunning performances by the Concert Band, Chinese Dance and the Hip Hop Dance Club. Finally, the prizes were awarded to students who had done well in their studies the year before.

Next up was the National Day Observance Ceremony. The representatives from each Uniformed Group stood at the ready to usher the Singapore Flag in. The entire school then sang a rousing rendition of the National Anthem with pride and gusto. This enthusiasm continued throughout the Recollections, where each student participated with vigor.

The day ended with a performance by the Choir, singing "Stand Up for Singapore". It was truly a memorable day for all Hua Yians.

Racial Harmony Day Celebration

Racial Harmony Day was commemorated in Hua Yi Secondary School on the 19th of July this year. It was a sobering yet meaningful event which consisted of different activities throughout the week.

During the commemoration, the school reminded Hua Yians that in 1964, Singapore saw race riots that tore the country apart. To prevent something similar from happening to our beloved country again, Singapore has decided that Racial Harmony Day is a day for schools to reflect on and celebrate Singapore's success as a racially harmonious nation.

To celebrate this occasion, the teachers of Hua Yi Secondary School dressed in beautiful costumes from a variety of ethnicities. Students of Hua Yi also visited booths which they could borrow ethnic costumes to try them on. They also bought polaroid pictures of themselves in such costumes. The proceeds from the sale of the pictures went to charity.

During the week, students also learnt more about the Maria Hertogh riots which shook the nation in 1964. They reflected on what they learnt during DEAR periods and CCE lessons as well. It was a truly fulfilling week in Hua Yi.
